Processing

The second link of the Value Chain i.e. “Processing” there are three levels of processing: wet and dry processing and roasting. The former counts by date 282 wet mills (Coffee washing stations) owned either by farmers (cooperatives), private investors and state.  The latter is the dry processing counting by date seven (7) dry mills with the ownership as wet mills. All of those processing are scattered at the scale of the whole country with a huge concentration in the Northern areas “Buyenzi area”: Kayanza-Ngozi-Kirundo and Muyinga provinces and Central area “Kirimiro area: Gitega-Muramvya-Karusi-Mwaro provinces, and with minor concentration in the Southern and Western areas “Mirwa and Imbo areas: Bubanza-Cibitoke-Bujumbura-Rumonge-Bururi and Makamba provinces of Burundi. The latter of this link of the value Chain “Roasting is not highly developed, however, roasting companies and café restaurants are growing with the growth of internal demand in terms of consumption. At this level, InterCafé is the key entity that organizes, monitors and coordinates the actors with collaboration of the Coffee Board

Burundi comprises three levels namely: wet processing, dry processing and roasting. Three ways of producing high quality coffee are practiced at the:

  • 1rst level of processing;
  1. Fully washing (depulping- fermentation-washing- soaking- pre-drying and sun drying)
  2. Natural (sun drying with pulps)
  • Honey (depulping – sun drying)

Here we have 282 operational wet processing

In Burundi there are 7 dry processing plants namely:
