Production

The coffee industry is structured in the legal entities from the bottom to the top. At the level of the first link of the Value Chain “Production”, the National Confederation of all Coffee Farmers Associations (CNAC-Murima w’Isangi) work hand in hand with the Department of the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock for extensive service related to farm maintenance, pest control and Good Agricultural Practices while InterCafé ensures the availability and supply of all inputs needed for that end.

This is the core link of the value chain. While Burundi coffee industry is driven by small householders that own small scale farms at their land, the CNAC jointly with the staff of the department of the MINEAGRI ensure:

  1. Seedling production,
  2. Farm maintenance and pest control,
  • Good agricultural practices dissemination and training,

Farmers play a great role at all stages.

Farmers are organised around coffee washing station in:

  1. Hill’s association;
  2. Cooperatives of farmers,

The production is     highly done in the thousands hills of Burundi that range of:

  • volcanic soils structure:
  • 1200-2000m of altitude, with
  • 9 month rainfall,

The newer coffee plantation is annual implemented in November each year for the nurseries developed from June of each year. It is the Government vision to rejuvenate all coffee at the national scale. This is made possible through the five years World Bank project “PACSC” that aims to make Burundi Coffee more competitive and enable market access.

The harvest is:

  1. Hand picking (cherries are floated in the water and hand sorted to eliminate defected one  before delivery to WS)
  2. From Mid-March to Mid-July
